Press Release: Doobie Brothers “In The Studio” Appearance
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
‘InTheStudio’ Salutes The DOOBIE BROTHERS On The 40th Anniversary Of The Captain And Me With Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons
Dallas, TX – MARCH 4, 2013. North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Bands celebrates the 40th anniversary of The Doobie Brothers’ third album The Captain and Me. After the breakthrough success of the Doobies’ second album Toulouse Street, the band was poised to add to their new found popularity, and did so with the 1973 million seller The Captain and Me which would garner the Top 10 hits “Long Train Runnin’” and the signature FM rock classic “China Grove”. The road demands on the band would prove to be especially difficult for singer/guitarist Tom Johnston, who reveals to InTheStudio host Redbeard how creative songwriting doesn’t always adapt well to the grind of a working band.
“After a while the road becomes such a factor that it becomes hard to be as creative as you were, because you’re not as carefree. Your life is scheduled. You’re going to do the soundcheck, you’re going to go back to the room, (then) back to the stage to do the show, and then back to your room, throw all these wet clothes into a bag and head off to the next town. You do that for month after month, and all those tours just become a blur.”

God, it’s been 40 years! I remember that when I heard “Long Train Runnin’” for the first time (my second semester of freshman year in high school), it knocked my socks off. When the DJ on WRKO 680 in Boston said that it was the Doobie Brothers, I couldn’t believe that the same band that had released “Listen to the Music” during the previous summer had been able to raise the already-high bar that it had so recently set for itself. “What Were Once Vices…” may have kicked more booty in a rock ‘n’ roll sense, but this album was more balanced between ballsiness and subtlety and had something for everyone. Hell; even my mother has her own copy of “The Captain & Me” and I didn’t even have to give/force-feed it to her.

I love what you guys did with Nobody. Any thoughts of re-recording any other tunes from the first album or earlier demos? How about an album of vintage Doobie do-overs and new stuff ? You know we’ll never let you guys retire!

I can remember seeing the Doobie Brothers at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver Colorado. It was a most excellent show. I have been a doobie Brothers fan for all Imy life ever since I was a kid and after that show it was guaranteed they were my favorite band. Since then I’ve seen them 5 times. I have at least 1 copy of everythingand they’ve ever done. They are awesome

A part of the interview describing the “tour” as not allowing as much time to be creative made sense to me. “Sound check, room, show, room, wet clothes in a bag and next town..”
When you consider the band started with “all kinds of time” to write the “Captain & Me” album – it meant they – like we – were young then and life was all ahead of us! I bet the band would love to go back to the Brass Knocker (Saratoga), Marin, Wheelers at Bodega Bay, Novato, Santa Cruz, Sonoma, Alex Valley, Sausalito – and all that went with it in the 70′s. We had time, dreams and each other.

Wow—————-hard to believe it’s been 40 years!!! Was 14 years old when The Captain & Me was released and that Album really, was when I officially became a “Doobieholic”!!! Tommy’s guitarmanship and vocals are incredible and Pat too, contributed a couple classics. No doubt this Album was and still is my all-time favorite!!! So many memories, from an old Jr. High School pal and I being die hard fans over the years, to dragging my folks’ antique furniture out into the street, renting top hats, et all for the High School gang and doing a re-shoot of the Album’s centerfold, at our 5 year High School reunion,…

Excellent interview. Cannot believe it is 40 years since The Captain and Me. Gotta figure out how to stop the wheels of aging from continuing to go around.
